Tile Guide

Tile continues to be one of the most popular home products for home settings. It resists moisture and heat, so it is a great flooring option for kitchens, bathrooms, and even basements. Also, because tile is available in so many different sizes, shapes, and patterns, it offers tremendous design versatility. Whether you want a natural stone look or a real wood look, there's a tile option for you.

As you probably know, tile isn't restricted to floors. It can be installed on walls, backsplashes, in custom showers, and on outdoor patios.

Be sure to check out the video below to get started with your tile choice:

Types of Tile

The three types of tile are ceramic, porcelain, and stone. Each offers its own unique style and performance advantages.

Ceramic tile is probably the most popular type of tile. It offers moisture and heat resistance, so it is one of the first choices in kitchens and bathrooms. Ceramic is easy to clean and maintain, and it comes in a variety of styles and designs.

Porcelain tile is very similar to ceramic, but it features a denser construction. This means that porcelain offers even more moisture and wear resistance than ceramic. As such, porcelain tile is suitable for outdoor areas such as patios.

Natural stone tile, as the name implies, is made from real stone. With this construction, stone tile is naturally strong, and it offers one-of-a-kind looks. Typically, stone is sealed to protect against spills and stains.

Where Can Tile Be Installed?

For the most part, tile can be installed anywhere in the home. It is especially popular as a flooring option in kitchens and bathrooms, mainly because it is considered waterproof. Tile also can be installed in basements, laundry rooms, and mudrooms. Because it is hard and cold underfoot, tile isn't popular in living rooms and bedrooms.

Like we mentioned before, tile can be installed on walls and in custom backsplashes. Wall tile and backsplash tile is smaller and thinner than floor tile, but it is usually more design-focused.
